What is LDC graduation? The UN classifies some countries as Least Developed Countries based on income, human assets and economic vulnerability. Bangladesh met the criteria to leave the group, and its graduation is scheduled for November 24, 2026.
Is the date final? Bangladesh asked the UN Committee for Development Policy on February 18 for a three-year extension. That request is still under review, so the date could move.
What changes for trade? LDCs enjoy special trade preferences, such as duty-free access to many markets. After graduation those preferences are phased out. The EU’s scheme provides a transition period after graduation, but long-term access will depend on new arrangements — which is why Bangladesh is seeking an EU free trade agreement.
How big is the risk? Economist Dr Mohammad Abdur Razzaque has warned that losing preferences could affect nearly half of Bangladesh’s export basket.
What is Bangladesh doing? It signed an Economic Partnership Agreement with Japan in February, has finished CEPA negotiations with South Korea, and is in talks with the EU, Singapore, Malaysia, the UAE and others. It has completed 38 feasibility studies on potential partners.
Is graduation good or bad? Both. It reflects development progress and can improve the country’s image with investors, but it removes some support. The outcome depends on how well exporters and the state prepare.
