The event: The 2026 IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok brought Bangladesh’s finance team face to face with both lenders as the country seeks new support after leaving its previous IMF programme early.
World Bank talks: On October 13, Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said Bangladesh is discussing about $10 billion in further World Bank financing after meeting the Bank’s managing director. “No decision is being made here. This is a discussion,” he told reporters, adding that talks would continue in Dhaka over the next few months. Talks on a partnership framework are also under way, with Bangladesh having submitted a written proposal.
IMF talks: After meeting IMF Deputy Managing Director Nigel Clarke, the minister said the Fund was satisfied with progress since the budget and that talks on a new programme will continue. Separately, IMF Deputy Director Sonali Jain Chandra urged tight monetary policy paired with broader reforms.
On forecasts: Asked about World Bank and ADB growth and inflation projections, the minister said the government does not intend to dispute them and is working to meet its budget targets.
Why it matters: Bangkok set the tone for the next few months of negotiations. Large multilateral packages typically come with conditions; the minister has said some conditions could be negotiated.
What to watch: The size and conditions of any IMF package, and whether World Bank support is weighted toward budget support or project lending.
