Smoke and Flames Seen Near Riyadh Airport Following Saudi Security Alert

The Policy Forums

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia — September 19, 2026: Thick smoke and flames were reported rising near King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh early Saturday, after Saudi civil defense authorities issued an overnight alert warning residents of a possible aerial attack.

Video footage circulating on social media showed a large column of black smoke near the airport’s fuel storage area, with residents describing loud booms overnight. Firefighters were seen responding to a fire near a fuel truck at the site, and flight-tracking service Flightradar24 reported that the airport was experiencing “major problems” amid the incident.

Saudi Arabia Issues All-Clear

Saudi Civil Defense had instructed residents in Riyadh and neighboring Al-Kharj to remain indoors and away from windows overnight while the alert was in effect. By Saturday morning, authorities issued an all-clear notification, though Saudi officials have so far declined to comment publicly on the cause of the fire or the nature of the threat.

One Riyadh resident, 27, described the tense overnight hours: “I heard the alarm, then my windows shook. It was definitely scary.”

Growing Tensions With Yemen’s Houthis

The incident comes against a backdrop of escalating hostilities between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi movement, which declared a naval blockade in July and has since intensified attacks on Saudi cities, energy infrastructure, and shipping in the Red Sea. Saudi authorities have not formally attributed Saturday’s incident to the Houthis, but social media posts pointed to purported claims referencing strikes on cargo facilities and fuel tanks near the airport.

UN Condemns Attacks

The UN Security Council issued a statement condemning “continued Houthi attacks against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, including attacks impacting civilian and energy infrastructure,” while also condemning the broader “Houthi military escalation in Yemen.” Separately, UN Assistant Secretary-General Khaled Khiari called for sustained diplomatic engagement to “prevent Yemen’s conflict from further threatening the security of the Red Sea,” warning of the risks to regional maritime navigation.

Airport Situation Under Watch

As of Saturday, Saudi authorities had not issued a further update on flight operations at King Khalid International Airport following the incident. The episode adds to a mounting pattern of Houthi-linked attacks on Saudi targets since July, raising concerns about the security of critical infrastructure and international air and sea routes in the region. Officials and international observers say the situation remains fluid, with further developments expected as investigations continue.
